In response to the 1993 White Paper on Science and Technology, and the proposal that a preparatory Masters programme be made available for potential research students, the Master of Research programme (MRes) was designed to provide a one year foundation to research, but at the same time to allow those who decide not to proceed to a PhD programme to obtain a qualification recognised in its own right. A key element to the programme is the inculcation of generic research skills. The course has proved to be extremely successful with almost 100% of graduates progressing to a PhD or to appropriate employment. This is a one-year full-time course with funding provided by the European Social Fund to cover fees and maintenance.
