Law at the University of Ulster has excelled in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008) with 90% of its research activity scored in the internationally recognized category (and 20% of this judged to be ‘world-leading’ in terms of originality, significance and rigour) and a doubling of the number of staff submitted compared with RAE 2001. This striking RAE result is all the more remarkable because it was achieved with a very young staff, producing original research at a very high level. The result validates both the inter-disciplinary dimension to law research at the University, and the innovative management strategies used to foster a strong and vibrant research culture. Law is ranked 14th out of 67 institutions in the Research Fortnight UK-wide league table for research ‘Quality’ in law (compared to 37th in the 2001 RAE exercise). The achievement of this result was particularly due to the establishment of a Transitional Justice Institute in 2003 (Law’s research institute), and a new Law School. The result affirms the international reputation and world class standing of legal research at the University of Ulster.
